British Aikido Board
Sensei Ashley Scholefield
For many years I have been interested in the martial arts. With a stint in Taekwondo I gave up for many years. After a while I saw an Aikido demonstration on eurosport and was immediately interested. After doing a lot of research I then learned that film actor Steven Seagal was a genuine master in the art. I watched some of his movies along with some Aikido video's then made the decision to look for a club. It took a while but I eventually found what I deem to be the best club in the UK with, in my view, the most talented and direct instructor Sensei Shane Riley 7th Dan. After training for many years both practically and physically I finally reached the prestigious level of Black Belt which from Sensei Riley is an achievement in itself as he does not grant this grade lightly, and since promoted to the level of Nidan. In 2006 I was asked by Sensei Riley and the senior White Rose instructors to become 'Sensei' for the new White Rose class in Slaithwaite Huddersfield. I accepted and have been a White Rose instructor ever since. Sensei Shane Riley is VERY selective who teaches his Aikido so for him to ask me was a massive honour! In 2009 myself, Matt Nicholls and Mark Nicholls came together to form Shinko Aikido. This is under the direction of Sensei Shane Riley, however completely run by me. I trained for many years with Matt and Mark in Sensei Riley's Thursday class and Sensei Dave Hemmings Tuesday class. We trained very hard, vigerous and left no room for error! This upbringing in Aikido has made us more direct and practical with our Aikido. Shinko in translation means Real/True. That is exactly what our Aikido and The White Rose Aikido is all about. Learning the traditional side to Aikido while at the same time adapting technique to the realities of the violence we are experiencing in the 21st century. With Sensei Rileys teachings within me I am a strict instructor but at the same time promote a relaxed atmosphere within the dojo which enables everyone to enjoy their session and take away with them maximum knowledge.
